Crochet, Baking and a Bicycle Ride

Busy days here this week, lots of running about to get things sorted out.  But it is all done for now and I have been able to sit and craft in between errands.  I had been meaning to make a liner for the bottom of my bicycle basket for weeks now…… and finally managed to find a sweet little pattern to adapt to suit my basket.   So I grabbed my crochet tub, sat out on the patio with the fresh sea breeze blowing gently and hooked up a little rectangle of pure crochet goodness……

photo-crochet-basket

I hooked up six circles, in colours to suit my bicycle, love the splashes of vibrant colour.  Then I added the border, I had never done this join as you go method before, once I got the hang of it, it was rather enjoyable.

photo-basket-liner-started

It was really good once I got a couple circles joined together, and could see in my mind the finished product.  And with this, I decided to change a couple of the circles and make them all include pink…… such pretty pops of colour.

photo-basket-line

Tah-dah……………….. here it is all finished and ready to pop into my bicycle basket.  I am really happy with how it turned out and it suits my bicycle nicely.

Pattern can be found here if you are interested, it is called flowers in the snow…… perfect name.

photo-banana-bread

There may have been an interval…… to bake some delicious fresh banana bread…… hmmm was rather yummy indeed…… more to be made this week I feel……

photo-basket-with-liner

Here is my splash of colour basket liner, all in place, and ready to ride…….. makes me smile taking some hooky crochet goodness with me on my bicycle rides.

photo-sunset-bicycle-ride

I was much later than usual last night, heading off for some exercise.  But now that I am in the habit, I refused to let my day pass without making the effort…… and for my effort I got to see the last nights beautiful sunset over the ocean…… bliss……

Handmade Gifts

Giving handmade gifts was on my list for this Christmas, and I managed to get all the items on my list completed, posted, and received, in the week before Christmas, and  I must say that I am rather happy with myself for sticking to it.

I did manage to post a few sneak peak photos on previous blogs, and on instagram, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, now I would like to share more details and the finished items.

casting-on-girl-wash-clot

I love casting on new projects, the anticipation and excitement.  Also I have not worked with pinks, purples, pretty girl colours for some time as I am the only female in my house, so colours tend to be mostly blues, and greens, browns, and the like, all extremely lovely, and I would never complain as I love it all, I truly do, and I especially love colours of the sea.  However I am slowly introducing pinks back into my creations, and gift making time was perfect timing for this!

girl-wash-cloth

I came across some great patterns on Ravelry, for pretty cloths with ‘pictures’ knitted into them….. perfect!

wash-cloth-flower

Love this teal colour, yes reminds me of the ocean…..

I had no idea, that you could create images within knitting, I am very much a novice indeed, and there may even be a name for this type of knitting but I have no idea, I just love it!  Would you like to see how they turned out…………

wash-cloth-combination-1

Tah-dah………

How sweet do these little images look, I gave these ones to my mum, and she loved them!   so happy with how they turned out.   A cute little gardening lad and lass……… and a crochet cloth to round it out.  I made one of the crochet cloths for myself and use it for washing the dishes, it does an amazing job and is wearing very well indeed, still like new.  Although I cannot bring myself to scrub anything grotty with it, I rinse those ones first 🙂

I do apologise, and regret not laying my cloths out better to photograph, the edges look a bit wonky in the pictures, but I promise they were nice and neat and straight, thats what I get for last minute rush to get them out the door and into the postal system 😦

Pattern for little garden girl dish cloth can be found here and little boy dish cloth here, both on Ravelry.

wash-cloth-combination-2

These ones I made for my mother in-law, who loves gardening and I thought would love some garden inspired/flowery cloths.  I must say I really enjoyed making all these cloths, but especially the lace work ones, they seem to be much faster to knit up, and I love seeing the pattern take shape.  A lot of time goes into those ones with the images on them, but very worth the effort.

All three patterns are again available on Ravelry.

lace-leaf

I think I may have blogged about this one before, but I truly loved making this lace leaf cloth, might be one of my favourites.  My boys were happily playing with their cars and tractors whilst I knitted…… another one of my favourites…….. bliss

Pattern for this one can be found here.

flower-progress

And of course there was plenty of crochet happening as well.

flower

This one is made from a wash cloth pattern, but as I was making it, I was thinking it would make a nice doily and my niece has told me she uses it for exactly that, which is lovely, and makes me smile.

If anyone is interested in making one, you can find the pattern here.  It is a really sweet pattern, and crochets up rather quickly.

collection

Some of my little collection, prior to gifting.  I am thinking I might continue making handmade gifts during the year, and have a little basket for my makings, so that when the occasion arises,  I already have the perfect gift for that special someone.   Well that is the plan anyway…….

Thank you for stopping by, I hope you enjoy my handmade ramblings……….

Busy Days

These past few weeks have been rather busy, lots of projects have been started, and need to be finished!!  I had a break in the middle as I was trying not to catch a Spring flu, all better now and enjoying this first day of Summer here in Australia.  We have put our Christmas tree up this morning, and I have been enjoying the trip down memory lane sorting through all our handmade decorations with my little ones…… bliss.

I will have to put up a blog about our handmade decorations, I have some new ones on the go at the moment, these ones involves knitting and crochet…. yay!

In fact lots of knitting and crochet has been happening lately, as I am hoping to make the majority of Christmas presents to give this year, and that has been keeping me occupied of an evening.

cotton

Once I had decided to go with handmade for presents, I ordered some cotton and was very happy when these gorgeous bundles arrived in the post.

washcloth-making

I settled myself in that very evening to begin a lovely washcloth, and have got a nice little collection now for gifting.  I use Ravelry for patterns and there is a huge number of wonderful patterns to select from.

washcloths

I am loving these washcloths and really think I need to make some for myself as well.  I have made several different patterns now, some for wash cloths and some for dish cloths.

wash-cloth-flower

Really love this teal colour cotton, and this dish cloth knitted up more rectangular than square, as it has a nice picture pattern – garden scene on it, I will have to blog this one later as I do not want to give away the surprise before it is unwrapped on Christmas day in case the recipient checks my blog.

lace-leaf

This one is a gorgeous lace leaf pattern, another learning project for me and I must say it was beautiful to knit and turned out just as it should so I am thankful for that.  Can you see all the little cars, and the tractor, yes my boys were happily playing together whilst Mummy did some knitting, it was lovely, really enjoyable to sit and knit and watch them play.

tea

Many cups of teas have been delightful whilst I sit and knit, and the occasional sweet treat has been enjoyed as well.

hibiscus

During the week I noticed these beautiful flowers coming up in my backyard and had to grab a picture, the colour is very refreshing amongst all the green.  I really am no green thumb and had to post a photo and ask the question as to what kind of flower it is and I have been informed that it is indeed an Hibiscus flower.  Very pretty and I must remember to pick one or two and pop in a vase, to bring the outside in.

This morning we have been decorating for Christmas, one lovely tinselled tree is now proudly standing tall in our living room and the little ones are most excited (and this mummy is rather excited herself).  Along with the tinsel it is covered in our handmade decorations from years past.  I have also been managing to sneak in some knitted and crocheted Christmas decorations, some finished, some nearly finished, and some not so much…… hoping tonight might be good to make some progress, and then I can share them here on my blog.  I have shared some pictures, and works in progress on my instagram account if anyone wishes to take a peek.

For now I am off to finish sewing a sweet little touch fairy pouch, as my eldest has lost his first tooth…… oh they grow too fast, I really wasn’t ready for this, neither was my little man, but we have had a long chat and we have processed and are now very excited about the tooth fairy coming to visit and hopefully leaving a nice little donation for the very first tooth.

My Cardigan

I am sorry that I have once again had an absence from my blog, unfortunately I have been unwell.  I am feeling much better but not completely back to myself, hopefully soon I will be.  I have been rather busy trying to catch up on all my regular tasks that I have gotten behind on, which seem to pile up rather quickly don’t they.   I have also been trying to keep up to date on my knit along which I fell behind on, however I am happy to say that I have finished yay!!  well I do still need to sew on my buttons which I am going to get done today…. I most certainly will.

miette-sleeves

Working sleeves in the round, I made my sleeves full length where the pattern was for three quarters sleeves.  They turned our nicely.

miette-trim

I wanted my Miette Cardigan to be full length, so not only did I add length to make the sleeves long, I also added length to the body of the cardigan, and I like that it was knitted in the round as I could easily try it on and make sure that I had completed enough rows to sitting nicely at full length.  I added extra rows to the ribbing edge also, to match the length of the ribbing on the sleeves.

flower

My little one picked this sweet little daisy from our garden to give to me whilst I was resting and knitting, such a sweet gesture and exactly what I needed.

country-style

There has also been some magazine reading and tea drinking over these last few weeks.

Would you like to see a complete photo of my cardigan…………..

miette-blockin

Ta-dah…….. my first ever cardigan knitted by me.   This was all set up ready to block, it is all dry now and looking at the forecast I might get the opportunity to wear it this week, I just need to get these buttons sewn on.  I am happy with how it has turned out, and really look forward to being able to wear it.   It fits nicely which is great.

I have already started my next project, a cute little vest for my little one.  I am about to start on the second ball of yarn, and my little one checks on my progress and has a feel of the yarn which is very cute.  The yarn is lovely and he picked it out himself, and he has made an excellent choice.  I look forward to sharing this project with you very soon.

Thank you for visiting my blog, hope you might return again soon.

A Knit-along

Yarn

Finally my yarn arrived for the knit-along my Sister in-law suggested we take part in.   My yarn was put onto back order, and it took a lot longer than advised to arrive, actually it took a month!!  Yes one whole month from order date to delivery, but I must say it is lovely yarn, and I probably wasn’t meant to start it earlier with a lot going on already.

beginning

I actually contemplated not joining in with the knit along seeing that I only have 3 weeks left to get it done, and I have never knitted a cardigan before so was unsure how long it would take me to complete.   But I kept going back to the pattern again and again, and decided to go for it.  So late one evening once the house was quiet, I cast on and began.

photo-miette

It did not take long for the pattern to start to take shape, and I really have been enjoying this knitting.

taking-shape

I have been making good progress, trying to get some knitting done every evening.

sleeves-off---insta

It was a bit daunting taking the stitches off the needle to leave the sleeves til later, however after doing this it really does look like a top now, very exciting.

end-of-ball

Now I am busy knitting the body, I am making mine longer than the pattern shows and really hoping it turns out nicely.   Looks like I might finish my second ball of yarn soon, I love how these soft fluffy balls of yarn change pattern for the last half of the ball, I know I am making progress when this pattern appears.

I have taken all these photos with my phone, I keep forgetting to take some nice photos with my camera.  I have just got my camera out now to remind me to take photos tonight.

For now I am off to get some Tea ready, then hoping to settle in for an early night.  It is really windy and quite cold here today, so snuggling up with my knitting sounds like a good idea.

Knitting

I may have been a bit quiet and absent lately, but I have been keeping busy.  Looking after my little ones, and when I have some down time I have been sitting and knitting.  I would like to share some of my projects with you.

beanie

I came across the pattern on Ravelry for this sweet beanie, and made the most of quiet evenings to get it made, the cabling and eyelets are so pretty together.

mittens

Mittens have been on my to do list for some time now, and I really love this pattern that I found on Ravelry.  Introduced new stitches into my knitting and really am happy with how they turned out.  Nice and warm in this wet and blustery weather we have been having here lately.

Teddy

My next project was to help me start on larger projects of the clothing kind.  I decided to simply give it a go, and to start small, I found a pattern that was on my to do list and it came in a baby size, I cast on and armed with some print outs I took to it, and it really didn’t take long to come together, and whilst the stitching isn’t perfect, I now know which areas I need to work on.  It was definitely a learning curve and I am glad I took the challenge.   It may not have turned out perfect, however I do feel it looks perfectly sweet on this Teddy that I made a few years back now.   This little vest is a very popular pattern, called the Milo Vest, also on Ravelry.

beach-hut

One of the areas I found that I needed to work on before tackling the vest in a larger size, was the garter stitch section.  I felt that I need to make my stitches more uniform and consistent, so I found this pattern for the perfect project to practice my garter stitch.  It is a little knitted beach hut door stop from The Wool Sanctuary.  I found lots of lovely patterns available, and can see myself visiting this website again when I have finished this cute stripey beach hut.  I can see that my stitches are improving with each piece that I complete, so this is a winner as not only is my knitting improving but I will also have a lovely new door stop for my home.

yarn

And my next cast on involves this delightful yarn which has finally arrived for me to start a lovely knit along cardigan, but more on this one later.  If you would like a sneak peek, I am on instagram under seashellsandoutbacktales, and have posted some snapshots of my project so far, it is coming along nicely.

This is what I have been up to other the last month or so, keeping my mind busy with projects, because when I have quiet time to myself, my mind wonders a bit too much lately.  Knitting is a nice way to fill these quiet moments, and having handmade items is so very heartwarming for me.  Now I am off to get settled for the evening and perhaps make some more progress with my cardigan.

Some days have been a challenge, and I have almost forgotten to take any photos to suit the theme and had to quickly find something to photograph that will fit in.  So now I try to check the night before to find out what I need to be on the lookout for the following day.  It is making me think outside the box, which is good.  I might try to post a selection of my photos at the end of each week up here on a blog post.  If you are on instagram, my user name is seashellsandoutbacktales if you are interested in following along with me.
